At an elevation of 2,250 metres, Paro Valley makes a beguiling start or an atmospheric end to an Amankora journey. Hidden in thick pine the 24-suites, with walls clad in wood and black steel panelling, contrast rustic elements with contemporary design. Amenities include king-size beds, traditional wood-burning stoves and banquette window-seats, while bathrooms featured terrazzo-clad bathtubs, twin vanities, a separate shower and toilet.

Set in the upper reaches of the Motithang area, the 16-Suite Lodge of Amankora Thimphu is built in the style of a traditional dzong fortress. Within reach of the capital’s shops and sights, the lodge remains a secluded retreat from which to explore both all the city has to offer and the wild Himalayan landscape. Amenities include king-size beds, traditional wood-burning stoves and banquette window-seats, while bathrooms feature terrazzo-clad bathtubs, twin vanities, a separate shower and toilet.

Gangtey Lodge

In the little-visited Phobjikha Valley near the village of Gangtey, the eight-Suite Amankora Gangtey is set on a forested knoll with scenic views of the valley floor and the 16^th century Gangtey Goemba monastery. Part of the Black Mountains National Park wildlife reserve, the valley is home each winter to a flock of 300 endangered black-neck cranes. Suite interiors are identical to those of Amankora Thimphu, each enjoying a view across the valley. Amenities include king-size beds, traditional wood-burning stoves and banquette window-seats, while bathrooms feature terrazzo-clad bathtubs, twin vanities, a separate shower and toilet.

Bumthang Lodge

Bumthang, directly translating as ‘beautiful field’, is home to 29 temples and monasteries, including the ancient Jambay Lhakhang, and is a treasure-trove of Bhutan’s art and painting traditions. The 16-Suite Amankora Bumthang rests adjacent to the Wandichholing Palace, within the town of Jakar in the Choekhor Valley. From here, guests can embark on a multitude of cultural and spiritual experiences, including the unforgettable experience of the 108 butter lamp offering at Taktsang Monastery. Punakha Lodge

Reached by crossing a suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River covered in prayer flags, Punakha Lodge incorporates a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse built by a former Je Khenpo (chief abbot of Bhutan). Located in a subtropical valley that produces most of the nation’s vegetables, the area is where the Bhutanese royals spend their winters. Eight of the suites are identical in design to those of Amankora Paro, with views across an orange orchard and rice terraces. The four Mo Chhu Suites are situated in a new building, and two feature separate 40 sq. m. living areas. The suites can be combined to offer two 2-bedroom units.

Bhutanese, Western and Indian dishes are available at the restaurants in each of the five lodges.

Amankora

Combining the Sanskrit word for peace with the Bhutanese for circular journey, Amankora allows guests to create a tailormade tour of their own, visiting all or a selection of the lodges at Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey and Bumthang with a driver provided for the duration of their stay.

After two decades of managing luxury safari camps, wine estates and an island escape in Africa, New Zealand and Seychelles, Jonathan Lithgow joined Aman in 2019 as Country Manager for Bhutan of Amankora. As his first stint in the Himalayas, Jonathan manages the five Amankora lodges, set in five valleys around the kingdom, and experienced as a singular journey of pilgrimage.

Candle Lit Potato Shed Dinner

"A ten-minute walk from our lodge is a stone-built potato shed which is built to house the local farmers’ autumn potato harvest. In the midst of all the spuds, we have mounted a bukhari, the traditional wood-burning oven to make the shed comfortably warm. With Bhutanese wooden furniture and the flickering candles the perfect setting for a romantic dinner is created. Start your evening with some ara, the local wine, by the bonfire outside, before retiring to your seats amidst the potatoes. Enjoy your Bhutanese meal in the rural surroundings whilst a musician enriches the atmosphere with Bhutanese instruments and folk songs."

A Cup of Unique and Rare Teas

"Sandwiched by two giants of tea culture – India and China, Bhutan has its own blends of the beloved drink. For the beginners, there’s Ngaja, a sweet blend with milk and sugar. Suja is a unique tea made with butter and salt, while for the true tea leaf connoisseurs, Bhutan produces one of the most rarest green tea blends – the Thunder Dragon Tea, grown and harvested in the grounds of one of the royal palaces in Trongsa Valley."

Try Your Hand on Archery

"Whilst in Bhutan, we strongly urge you to have a go at the country’s national sport, archery. In the past, the hunting bows were made of long single pieces of bamboo, bound with leather. They have now been replaced by modern versions and are solely used for sporting events. However a version of the original bow is still used in local archery contests. We have several available in all of the Amankora lodges and one of us will be happy to offer instructions, or challenge you, any time you wish."

Traditional Bhutanese Tented Dinner

"Amankora Paro Terrace, with its beautifully laid flagstone, serves as a majestic dinner venue with the backdrop of the white washed facade of the Living Room and the fragrant pine forest beyond. Dinner tables are set under a magically embroidered, traditional Bhutanese Ceremonial Tent. The tent is gently lit with ferry lights and numerous flickering lanterns across the terrace. Warmth and ambience is added with large wood burning fire bowl around the tent."

Cook the Mountain with a Cooking Class

"Master the art of Bhutanese cooking by signing up for a private cooking class with our chef at Amankora Punakha lodge. With many years of culinary experience he is happy to share his knowledge and newfound passion for the Bhutanese cuisine. The cooking class is taught at the lodge courtyard or in the former farmhouse kitchen, owned by a revered Buddhist lama. After your hands-on cooking class in the afternoon you can enjoy the exotic aromas of your newly acquired culinary skills during dinner. Best of all, take a taste of Bhutan home to impress your family and friends with."

Village Hot Stone Bath with a View

"In Amankora Gangtey you have the opportunity to soak in a traditional wooden tub out in the open. The bath is situated in a candle-lit stone hut in Tokha village, a fifteen-minute walk from the lodge. The sliding bamboo doors allow full privacy yet offer open views of magnificent Phobjikha Valley. When you arrive, the stones used to heat up the water will be red hot on the outdoor fire. Sit back and unwind in the bath for as long as you wish as you sip on a cup of hot apple juice and watch the sun set. Your body will benefit from the minerals in the stones and the healing effects of the local herbs. On return to the lodge, you can prolong your experience with a relaxing massage in our spa as the perfect end to your rejuvenation."

Khamsun Temple Breakfast

"From Amankora’s Punakha lodge, the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten is an easy morning trail away, which takes you through farmyards and rice paddies and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the local farming traditions. While you enjoy the superb views of the valley from the chorten roof top, your guide will have found the perfect picnic spot in the gardens surrounding the chorten and laid out your continental breakfast for you to enjoy in the morning sun. Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten is 100 ft / 30 m tall, three-leveled chorten which took eight and a half years to build, consecrated in 1999 and dedicated to the Fifth King."
