Krabi

Krabi

Every bit the archetypal Thai seaside destination, Krabi is the rugged, outdoorsy counterpart to the country’s more refined jetsetter beach hideaways. And we’re not just talking about the jagged coastal landscape here, punctuated with towering limestone shards – the wilderness is wild, the coastal mangrove forests are gnarly, and the curries which make up the local cuisine take no prisoners. In a conch shell, Krabi is not a selfie destination, but one that inspires you to dive in head first.

The majority of Krabi-bound travelers end up in tourist-central Ao Nang and rock climbers’ playground Rai Leh. For substantially less bustle (as in non-existent), beaches like Tuk Kaek, with nary a beach vendor to be seen, will leave you proud to have found paradise lost, not to mention some of the most luxury hotels in Krabi. Offshore adventurers have some 130 islands to explore, including Koh Lanta, and lest we forget, Koh Phi Phi with its film set fame.

While Krabi Town might not be the most spectacular capital, the bustling local life and night market justify a detour on the way to or from Krabi International Airport, which receives direct flights from within Thailand as well as regional hubs including Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Doha.
