The Zermatt show is spectacular in itself, no doubt about it, but the real wonder goes on behind the curtains at Backstage Hotel. Perched atop a 20-year-old art and entertainment establishment in the basement, the collection of rooms and spaces are about as far as you can get from a classic Alpine ski resort image. Do double-look décor and furnishings catch your fancy? Pop into the store next door or have something made by Heinz Julen, the Zermatt-based designer/architect and hotel proprietor that showcases his bold design sensibilities. Dinner followed by a movie? How about dinner during a cinema showing? Bah, who wants a standard spa experience when you can be reborn through a seven-part interpretation of Genesis. Quirky and catchy, not for the faint of (he)art.
