Just as you shouldn’t judge a city by its traffic – which definitely leaves a lot to be desired here – one shouldn’t decide on a hotel by its exterior. Plopped in the hard-to-beat center of the city, the Shangri-La is a micro-universe of calm in the chaotic former capital. The view out to the river is nice, but the vistas over Shwedagon Pagoda are absolutely breath-taking. After a day exploring colonial districts, markets, and pagodas, relax poolside, re-energize at the dinner buffet (surprisingly decadent), rejuvenate and repeat.
